This day celebrates the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for equal rights and against racial segregation in the United States. It is held on the third Monday in January each year.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist and one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement. He advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his most famous speech, “I Have a Dream”, before the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Since the year 2000, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is officially celebrated in all fifty U.S. states, although some of them call it Human Rights Day.
